The Problem With Transparency

I read an article I vehemetly disagreed with earlier today. In fact, it made my blood boil, and I was actually going to write a really snarky comment a) to the article, b) on this blog. And then I started thinking. If I were to call someone something really nasty and rude here, that will almost certainly come back to haunt me. Someone, sometime will dig it out, brandish it and say “See, this guy calls people assholes for no apparent reason! He’s clearly an arrogant and unstable man who should not be trusted!”

We often assume that transparency will lead to more discussion, more openness, a better climate all along. But what happens when people start to realize just how dangerous transparency can be? Will people start watching their tongues, afraid that everything they say will be archived and can be used against them? Will the Googlescape quiet down discussions?
